It's your day. Everything should be the way you want it. Lighting
and ceiling drapery decorations add a unique and memorable element
to your special day. From star filled skies, awe-inspiring dance
lighting, dancing on clouds for your first dance, and the ability
to customize your own monogram (name or initials in light) are
just a few ways to make your next event amazing memorable and
even more enjoyable.
Lighting Ideas: Reception Lighting
Basics
Think lighting your reception site means flipping on a light
switch? If you want to turn your site from standard to simply
stunning, you'll probably need to take a more illuminating approach
to your decor. "Lighting creates a mood," says event
designer Preston Bailey, and when it's done well, lighting can
make everything look better -- including your flowers, cake, and
guests . Here's the right way to plan your lighting.
Light the walls and ceiling
A room or tent can be completely transformed using a wash of
one color on the walls with another color on the ceilings, or
you can project a geometric pattern or theme-oriented pattern
such as palm trees on the walls.
Light the dance floor
Dance floor lighting is one of the most important aspects of
lighting. A properly lit dance floor permits the guests to become
part of the event. Dance floor lighting allows your guests be
the stars by putting them in the spotlight. Use intelligent lighting
suspended from a truss over the floor in the same shape as the
dance floor not over the head of a DJ!
Light buffets, centerpieces, floral
arrangements and bars
Pin spots are used to light centerpieces, floral arrangements,
buffets and, occasionally, bars. Hanging pin spots is an art,
as you do not want them to shine in guests' eyes. Usually pin
spots are used one pin spot for a low centerpiece and two pin
spots for a high centerpiece. Pin spots are between $20 to $50
each for an event. Remember that if your client is spending from
$100 to $250 for a centerpiece, they certainly will spend a little
more to see that it is lit properly.
Wash the room
The purpose of the room wash is to set the ambiance. The room
should never be too dark, yet nothing is worse than going to an
event that uses house lighting on at 100 percent. A magenta wash
makes women look beautiful, guys look handsome, food looks scrumptious,
the crystal gleams, and the room has a warm glow that makes guests
feel comfortable.
Ceiling Draping & Swags
Dramatic, romantic, luxurious. These are words that describe
the effect that ceiling draping create with chiffon draped from
the ceiling of your wedding reception.
Drapery
By decorating special tables at your wedding reception you are
showing you attention to detail. Whether it be the wedding cake
table or the receiving line tables, your guests will notice.
LEARN LIGHTING LINGO
Here are the types of lighting commonly used at weddings.
Pin spot A focused beam of light that shines directly
onto an object, like a centerpiece or wedding cake, as a highlight
effect.
Color wash There are a few different types of light fixtures
that can create a "wash," which is basically a blanket
of colored light covering an entire area.
Gobos Circular stencils that are put over a light to project
a design or pattern. Popular gobo designs are monograms, dates,
or any other wedding motifs. The complexity of the design will
affect the gobo's cost -- a simple stencil can be stamped out
of steel, while a more intricate design must be laser etched out
of stainless steel or a glass that can withstand high heat (costing
much more than a stamped stencil).
Led Short for light-emitting diodes, LED lights are currently
popular for weddings because they use much less electricity (and
don't get as hot) than regular, incandescent light bulbs. This
means they can sometimes be wireless, so they're much more discreet.
LEDs are great for color changes and vibrant colors. They're also
common in strands and good for accent lighting.
